Overview - Wayne County

Wayne County is a mostly rural county of about 95,000 residents, bordering Monroe County to the west and Lake Ontario to the north. Apple farming is one of the bigger industries here. The county contains several villages nestled along the historic Erie Canal, and is home to the annual Hill Cumorah Pageant, which draws people from all over the country.

Lakefront communities such as Sodus Point and Wolcott have some of the best fishing in the region, and crowds flock to the lake and to Sodus Bay for fishing derbies. Mormonism started in the town of Palmyra and is celebrated during the Hill Cumorah Pageant. The county has plenty of antique shops and farm markets and historic societies, as well as the truly unique Chimney Bluffs State Park. There’s a ski resort here and a racetrack, along with historic sites such as the quaint hamlet of Pultneyville and nature centers such as the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.
